Reasons For How Music Impacts Film

Without a doubt, Rufus Wainwright is one of the most original songwriters out there today. Countless people have been moved by his compositions. I am personally a huge fan of Wainwright’s unique style, and when the question of the best Rufus Wainwright songs came up in a conversation among a few music-loving friends, I had to answer it.

Rufus delivers a withering critique of California life, veiled in a poppy tune with Beach Boys harmony. It recalls how he worshiped Hollywood as a kid, but how now he’s disillusioned by how seriously California takes itself. “Ain’t it a shame,” he says, that the rest of the world “can’t enjoy your mad tradition” and the “soft-skinned boys” that can still bruise you. It’s a satirical comment on a world he has to live cartoon in to do the work he does. The last line says it all: “Life is the longest death / in California.” Funny that the first time I spent time with this song I was driving the 101 to LA.

Even though many of the lyrics on her album “Loose” are sexually suggestive, Furtado has repeatedly rejected attempts by outside influences to oversexualize her image. She turned down $500,000 that was offered to her by Playboy to use Nelly Furtado pictures. She refuses to pose in sexy outfits for magazines, and was very upset when a men’s magazine digitally removed portions of her outfit so it appeared more revealing.

Fonda and Hopper had asked to include Bob Dylan’s “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” and hoped that Dylan would write an original theme song for the film. Dylan, however, did not like the film’s ending in which the protagonists are killed in the South. Dylan refused to license his recording of “It’s Alright, Ma,” but would permit a cover version to be included as long as it did not end the film.

Musically there is nothing better than a beautiful, well-written, well-arranged and well-performed love song. I’m not knocking Rock, Pop or any other genre but I personally believe that the greatest love songs have come from R&B and Soul music, songs recorded by singers like Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, etc. But I also think that some of the best Hip-Hop songs ever made have been about love and romance.

My Chemical Romance took a more laid back approach in ‘The Ghost of You,’ but that doesn’t make the song any less effective. This sad number explores the pain of the loss of a loved one. While it’s one of the more moody tracks on their ‘Three Cheers for Lovely Revenge’ record, it perfectly demonstrates the bands knack for combining mournful melodies with an angst driven delivery.

Nothing is further from the truth. We thrive in the area of social status because we often lack status in other areas; the areas that count the most. Publicly, our social persona helps us maintain the appearance of being someone, and being liked. It also fortifies the illusion of our swagger.

Furtado plans to release her fourth album between May and August of 2009. She will be recording songs in English and Spanish for the new record. She will also be recording an entire album in Spanish and an additional album in Portuguese.
